If you’re trying to troubleshoot a problem with your iPhone 13, or just want to save battery life, turning off your device can be a good idea.
There are a few ways to do this, including using hardware buttons and the software shutdown button. But if you can’t get your iPhone to shut down, or it acts erratically, you may need to force restart it.
How to Turn Off Your iPhone 13
If your iPhone 13 freezes or doesn’t respond as it should, you may want to shut it down. However, it can be difficult to find the right button to press to power off an iPhone.
Fortunately, you can use the virtual Shut Down feature on iPhones running iOS 11 or later. This makes it easier to turn off your iPhone without needing to press the hardware buttons.
The easiest way to do this is to hold the Side button and either volume buttons at the same time. This will invoke the “Slide to Power Off” slider on the screen.
1. Press and Hold the Side Button
If your iPhone 13 has a side button that you can press and hold, you can shut down your device using the side button alone. However, it won’t activate Siri or perform other tasks.
When you turn off your iPhone 13, it usually requires a 30 second wait before you can restart it.
To force restart your iPhone 13, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. Then, release the button.
2. Press and Hold the Volume Up Button
If your iPhone’s buttons aren’t working, you can still turn off the device by pressing and holding the volume up button. This will work on most iPhone models with no home button.
When you do this, your iPhone will vibrate letting you know it’s ready to be turned off. After a few seconds, the shutdown screen will appear and you can then release your volume buttons and slide the power slider to the right to shut down the phone.
If that doesn’t work, you can also try a reset or force restart. These options will reset the iOS software, which can help fix a variety of issues such as performance and battery usage.
3. Press and Hold the Volume Down Button
If your iPhone 13 has a volume down button, press and hold it until the screen goes black. Then, release the button after about five seconds.
You can also try a hard reset by pressing and holding both the volume up and volume down buttons until you see the Apple logo. However, this isn’t great for the software, so only do it when other methods haven’t worked.
Another option is to enter recovery mode on your computer and update or restore your iOS device. This will erase all of your personal data and return your phone to a new state.
4. Press and Hold the Top Button
If your iPhone 13 doesn’t have a Home button, you can still turn it off by pressing and holding the top button on the device. This will also force restart your iPhone and will reload iOS, which will often fix issues like battery life, performance, or software bugs.
While this isn’t a recommended method, it’s an easy way to switch off your phone without using its screen. It’s especially useful when your iPhone’s screen is broken or not working at all.
5. Slide to Power Off
Turning your iPhone 13 off is a great way to save battery life, and it can give you some peace of mind when you’re away from it for a while. However, turning your phone off can be confusing if you don’t know how to do it properly.
Fortunately, you can easily shut down your iPhone without pressing any buttons by using a hidden setting in iOS. This feature is particularly useful when the Side button doesn’t work or you have trouble using your device with one hand.
